The Wall Street Journal has reported that US President Donald Trump is seeking a possible agreement with Iran to bring the ongoing conflict to an end.
According to the report, Trump has told senior officials that he would be prepared to reach an understanding with Tehran even in the absence of a comprehensive nuclear agreement, provided that the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened to maritime traffic.
The report said Trump had been preparing for several weeks to present the restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz as a possible diplomatic success.
However, negotiations are said to have become more difficult after Iran presented a series of tough demands.
Trump has reportedly discussed with senior advisers the possibility of ending the conflict without first securing a nuclear agreement, but Iran’s conditions have complicated efforts to reach a compromise.
